"You
gotta embrace your inner freak, 'cause the only thing
that you'll regret is denying who you really are."
First
Appearance:
#1.1 "Genesis"
Location:
Odessa, TX
Profession:
Student
Known Relatives/Associates:
Claire Bennet (friend)
Powers:
Zach does not appear to have powers of any kind.
Character Biography:
Not much is known about Zach aside from the fact that
he is somewhat of an outcast at Union Wells High School,
where he attends with Claire
Bennet.
Prior
to the events of the first episode of Heroes, Zach
and Claire had not really interacted "since middle
school." Claire recruited Zach to film her doing
some "invincible" things. At one point it seemed
that Zach had misplaced the tape. It had actually been
taken by HRG, Claire's father, but it eventually returned
to Zach's possession.
Zach
is proud of his outsider status and wears his "freak"
badge with honor. He feels as though he should not have
to conform to anyone else's expectations or standards.
Zach
was one of the leaders in the campaign to get the vote
out and name Claire Homecoming Queen. When Claire was
told she was not allowed to attend the Homecoming festivities,
Zach helped to "break her out" of her parent-imposed
exile. By this time - only two weeks into their friendship
- Claire admitted that Zach was one of her closest and
best friends.
Following
the grisly events of the Homecoming dance, HRG decided
that Zach (as well as Claire's brother Lyle) knew too
much and ordered The Haitian to wipe his memory. Because
of this, Zach no longer remembers his friendship that
he shared with Claire.
The
character of Zach (last name unrevealed) has his own Myspace
profile set up by the show's producers. Inside, he
has a blog which offers some of the character's thoughts
and feelings on the events seen on the series. On the
Myspace profile, it is reiterated that Zach feels Claire's
approaching of him in "Fallout" was a "cheerleader
prank."
Despite
Zach's accusation that Claire must have been "body
snatched," she persisted and revealed her powers
to him all over again.
The
Myspace profile also brings into question the issue of
Zach's sexuality. In it, Zach's sexual orientation is
listed as "Not Sure." This, combined with Jackie's
comments on the series itself and Zach's assurances that
he does not have a crush on Claire, has led many fans
to suspect that he is gay. However, publicists for NBC
have denied this. Creator Tim Kring said in an interview
that this was at one point considered but for reasons
unconfirmed to the fans, the Zach character has been retconned
to heterosexual.
