The Greatest American Hero Talks Heroes!
Actor William Katt, who appeared in one of TV's most iconic hour-long superhero series The Greatest American Hero, appeared at a special celebration of the 25th anniversary of the classic series in Los Angeles, CA on September 7.
The event united Katt with his Greatest American Hero co-stars Connie Selleca, Michael Pare, and Robert Culp, series creator Stephen J. Cannell, and others involved with the program. It also served as a good launch for Katt's upcoming Greatest American Hero comic book series as well as a feature film being written by Cannell. An online web series is also forthcoming featuring the voice talents of the original GAH cast.
Katt will be appearing in the second episode of Heroes Season Three, and HeroSite's Craig Byrne was fortunate enough to be able to talk with Mr. Katt a little bit about his upcoming Heroes role.
"I don't watch a lot of TV, and I don't watch a lot of the science fiction genre in television, because I find it's not done well, [but] when I saw the pilot of Heroes, and the first couple episodes, I thought I had struck gold, because as an audience, it was just everything that science fiction genre should be. It was well done; it was a feature film. It was dark; it was intricate. It was filmed like a feature film. The actors were complicated and interesting, and it was funny and dramatic; it was just fantastic," Katt says.
Before getting his role for the second episode airing on September 22, "The Butterfly Effect," Katt had a connection to one of Heroes' most revered directors, Greg Beeman. "Greg Beeman and I had worked together a few years ago on Problem Child 3," Katt reveals. "We had a wonderful time on it. John Ritter, at the time, was unavailable to do Part 3, so I stepped in, and I guess because of that experience some years ago, Greg Beeman gave me a call, and said 'Bill, would you like to come down? There's a wickedly funny, acerbic kind of bad guy that I think you could do a great job with.' So I came in, and this wonderfully written part was there."
Katt seems to be honored and is very humble when it comes to the adoration and respect he has maintained from the Greatest American Hero, from the original series through to syndication and the show's recent success on DVD.
"It's a wonderful surprise, and I didn't expect it, and I'm a little bit overwhelmed by it, but I'm so grateful and appreciative for fans that have welcomed me back into their television lives," he says.
Don't miss William Katt on Heroes, September 22 on NBC! Also, keep an eye out for Catastrophic Comics' Greatest American Hero comic book, coming soon, and you can find the entire Greatest American Hero TV series on DVD!
