Review:
The Heroes Soundtrack!
The first official Heroes
soundtrack hits Best Buy stores exclusively on Tuesday,
March 18. HeroSite's Craig Byrne has had the opportunity
to review the CD a few days early! Here is the review...
The
Product: An official Heroes soundtrack is something
fans have wanted ever since hearing the great work of "Wendy
& Lisa" with the "voice of Shenkar" in
the very first episode. Heroes has one of the most unique
"sounds" on television, and the show's soundtrack
helps to further establish the show's identity.
NBC
Universal has worked with the show's executive producer
Allan Arkush to create a listening experience of some of
Wendy & Lisa's best mixed with some music from "top
acts." This soundtrack is available only at Best Buy
stores, though it can also be purchased online via Zune
with bonus features on other sites (see
the press release for more information). The CD contains
18 tracks.
The
Tracks: Here's what you can find on the Heroes soundtrack
CD:
1.
Heroes Title - Wendy & Lisa
2. Fire and Regeneration - Wendy & Lisa
3. He's Frank - Brighton Port Authority featuring Iggy Pop
4. All For Swinging You Around - New Pornographers
5. Glad It's Over - Wilco
6. Weightless - Nada Surf
7. Nine In The Afternoon - Panic! At The Disco
8. Chills - My Morning Jacket
9. Natural Selection - Wendy & Lisa
10. ABoneCroneDrone 3 - Shelia Chandra
11. Not Now But Soon - Imogen Heap
12. Jealously Rides With Me - Death Cab For Cutie

14. Homecoming - Wendy & Lisa
15. Man In The Long Black Coat - Bob Dylan

17. Keeping My Composure - The Chemical Brothers featuring
Spank Rock
18. Heroes - David Bowie
The
Review: While I liked a lot of the music on this soundtrack,
the real reason to purchase this CD would be to get the
Wendy & Lisa music that was created especially for the
show. The rest... seems kind of flat. Other TV series, such
as Smallville
or Grey's
Anatomy, use pop music a lot, and their soundtracks
are full of music from their respective series; most of
the tracks on this CD are things I have never heard before
and seemed to only be there to cash in on the Heroes
name.
Maybe
there was the concern that a CD full of the "Heroes
sound" containing just the incidental music from the
series wouldn't sell enough; but that is what I really would
want and expect from a release like this. That being said
though, the Wendy & Lisa stuff is the best part of this
release. I DARE you to listen to track two and NOT try to
do your own Mohinder voiceover.
Also,
not to sound like a huge complainer, but I hate, hate, HATE
"store exclusives." If I want to make my purchases
via, say, Amazon.com,
I should be able to do that and not be forced to go through
Best Buy. I feel the same way when DVD's with exclusive
material are created. It's really a shame that they've gone
this way, though hopefully the soundtrack will get a wider
release later.

The
packaging and artwork look great, as per usual when
it comes to Heroes tie-ins. The sound of the
CD is also great, and it is obvious a lot of talented
people worked on putting this together.
On
a scale of 1 to 10, I'd have to ultimately give this
CD a 7. It's fun to listen to, but like I said
before, I'd like more of the "Heroes sound"
and less "popular music" that has very little
to do with the show.
The
Heroes soundtrack is available at Best Buy
on Tuesday, March 18.
